Countdown To Halloween // Day Eighteen

Welcome back to day eighteen of my countdown to Halloween series, where I share all of my favourite Halloween films. Today's film is...
Halloween Film List Hush 2016 // Petit Belle Chaton

The film follows Madison Young (Kate Siegel), an author who completely lost the ability to hear and speak after a surgery for bacterial meningitis went wrong when she was just 13. She moved away from the city, to an isolated house in the woods so she could focus on her writing more but when the 'Masked Man' (John Gallagher Jr.) realises that she's deaf, he sees her to be an easy target and makes her his next victim...

I've said it before and I'll say it again; I love Mike Flanagan. I love his take on what makes a great horror film...good directing and writing and minimal jump scares. He believes that if you care about the characters, you'll find it scary anyway, which is completely true.

I recently watched Gerald's Game (2017) and I couldn't stop thinking about it for days and days afterwards, I definitely think that's without a doubt Flanagan's best work to date but Gerald's Game aside, I also really loved Hush (2016).

I don't usually like those typical home invasion thrillers, mainly because I've seen enough of them by now and they all go down the same route and end in the same way and I've had enough of watching films like that honestly. However, a friend recommended this to me and thought I'd like it so I gave it a go and I very much did like it. Yes, it's a home invasion film but it's very well directed and written and although there's a couple of cliche tropes, it doesn't feel stale like the others I've seen. It's gripping and the protagonist is actually really likeable, so you're rooting for her from the start.

My favourite thing about this film has to be the sound design and the way that they show us what we, the audience can hear vs what Maddie can actually hear. The use of sound is used very well throughout the whole film and they know exactly when to cut the sound to make things even more tense. For example, they would show that Maddie cannot hear anything but we'll see him behind her, without her noticing and that's so terrifying. I also really loved the cinematography and the use of light (or lack of) throughout the film because it made you feel so much more on edge.

The performances from both leads were incredible. Especially Kate Siegel, she does not get enough credit for her part in this film, she made it feel so believable.
If you loved how in Gerald's Game they kept showing you what the protagonist was thinking and the scenarios they created in their head, so much so, that you thought for a minute that it was actually happening but later realised it's all inside her head, they do that a lot in this film too!

"I can come in anytime I want. And I can get you, anytime I want. But I'm not going to. Not until it's time. When you wish you're dead... that's when I'll come inside."
