Countdown To Halloween // Day Twenty-Six

Welcome back to day twenty-six of my countdown to Halloween series, where I share all of my favourite Halloween films. Today's film is...

The film follows the Hansen family: mother Lynette (
Caroline Rhea)
and children Adam (Matt O'Leary), Chelsea (Laura Vandervoort) and Taylor (Myles Jeffrey). Issues arise when Adam and Chelsea both become grounded; Adam has got VIP passes to his favourite band, the Headless Horseman and Chelsea has an important date with her boyfriend, Peter. They both don't want to miss out on the weekend's events so they decide to do whatever it takes to get their mother out of the house for the evening, even if it does mean setting her up with a mysterious man...

If you know me, you'll know how much of a sucker I am for anything nostalgic. In particular, all things that give me that nostalgic feeling of Halloween as a child. And what better way to get this than watching Disney Original Movies? One of my favourites back in a day was Mom's Got A Date With A Vampire (2000) and I'd watch it every year. It was one of those films that made it feel like it wasn't actually Halloween until it had been watched.

I hadn't watched this in a couple of years, mainly because I have so many films I like to watch at Halloween and in reality, there just isn't always enough time to watch them all but I actually watched this yesterday and it reminded me just how much I loved it.
Admittedly, it probably hasn't held up to how great (and scary) I used to think it was but I won't lie, I still really love it. Aunt Hilda from Sabrina The Teenage Witch plays Lynette and Lizzie McGuire's Father plays Malachi Van Helsing (the vampire hunter), which just makes me love it that little bit more. If you grew up watching these shows too, I'm sure you'll understand.

My favourite thing about this film is that through most of the film, the character of Lynette is kind of unlikeable and slightly pathetic, so much so that you're not even really rooting for her or the outcome of her date, but it all changes when she finally realises that she doesn't need a man, especially a misogynistic one at that...and she tells him she's found what she felt has been missing from her life and that was just a piece of her that she lost along the way, not him. I didn't realise all those years ago that we needed feminism in films but today, it makes me so happy watching them and thinking that things like this really influenced us as children.

This isn't a film you should watch if you're expecting something amazing but if you want to watch an old Disney Original Movie this Halloween, this could be the one for you...

Oh, and that nostalgia I was talking about earlier? You'll feel it so much while watching this film, especially when Adam is on his computer at the start and the internet connection is so slow that it takes ages for web pages to load...Who remembers those days?
